Full Prime Herndon Shines at Copa Virginia: A Milestone for Jiu-Jitsu in Herndon
This past March, our team stepped onto the mat in Annandale for the Copa Virginia — the Virginia Jiu-Jitsu Cup — and it was our very first official tournament as a team. For a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in Herndon that had opened its doors only a few weeks earlier, the result was beyond anything we expected: Full Prime Herndon finished 4th place overall as a school. Here's what that day meant for our community — and why it matters for anyone thinking about training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Herndon, VA.
What is the Copa Virginia?
The Copa Virginia, also known as the Virginia Jiu-Jitsu Cup, is one of the state's premier Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu championships. Held in Annandale, VA, it brings together high-level competitors and academies from across Northern Virginia and the wider region. For a school, it's both a proving ground and a celebration of the sport — athletes of every level and age test their technique under real pressure, and teams measure how their training stacks up against the best in the area. Competing there is a serious step for any academy, and for a new one it's a bold one.
Punching above our weight
When we call this a milestone, we mean it literally. We brought a team of roughly 15 competitors to the event, going up against much larger, well-established gyms — many of them with multiple affiliate locations feeding athletes into the same banner. Full Prime is an independent academy: it's just us, here in Herndon, with no network of branches behind the name.
To finish 4th overall as a school, less than two months after opening our doors, against teams many times our size, told us something important: our approach to training works. Medals and placements are never the whole story, but a result like that — earned by a brand-new, single-location academy — is a strong signal of the quality of instruction happening on our mats every week.
What this says about our training in Herndon
Our competitors didn't get there by accident. Every student at Full Prime — from the youngest in our Kids Jiu-Jitsu program (ages 3–11) to beginners and seasoned grapplers in our adult Gi classes — trains under founder and head instructor Fabiano Papel, a 4th-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and IBJJF medalist. Just as importantly, we teach using a structured methodology developed exclusively by Full Prime Jiu-Jitsu School, rather than borrowing a generic curriculum.
What made the Copa Virginia result so rewarding was seeing how far our athletes had come in such a short window of time. That rate of progress isn't reserved for the competition team — it's the same structured, step-by-step instruction that every new member receives from their very first class. When you train somewhere that can take a brand-new team to the podium against the region's biggest gyms, you know the day-to-day coaching is the real deal.
You don't have to compete to benefit
Here's something we tell every prospective student: competing is optional. Most of our members never set foot in a tournament, and that's completely fine. The majority train for fitness, real-world self-defense, stress relief, confidence, and the community that comes with a great academy.
The point of sharing our Copa Virginia debut isn't to suggest you need to compete — it's to show the level of care and structure behind the training. The same attention to detail and progressive curriculum that prepared our competition team is exactly what a first-day beginner or a parent enrolling their child walks into. For kids, that means an age-appropriate, inclusive program with a strong anti-bullying focus. For adults, it means classes built so complete beginners and experienced practitioners can grow side by side, at their own pace.
What's next for Full Prime Herndon
A 4th-place finish in our very first outing set the bar — and we intend to keep raising it. As our team grows and our students continue to develop, we'll be back at upcoming championships aiming for the top of the podium. But our real mission goes beyond medals: to become the home of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Herndon, VA, for families and adults who want to train somewhere serious, welcoming, and built for the long term.
